By registering your vehicle with your local department of motor vehicles or transportation agency, you have legal rights over that car, and you can drive it without violating the law. As a rule, the registration is an official document that you carry in the car while driving.

Registration of vehicles in Kenya is done by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), which is also responsible for issuing motor-vehicle number plates through its Road Transport Department (RTD). KRA offices are located in Nairobi Times Towers building on Haile Selassie Avenue.

The first motor vehicle registration in Kenya was issued in 1938 and currently the country is in the third generation motor vehicle number plate series introduced in 2007 which started from KBA001A and expected to end at KBZ999Z.

What Documents Are Required for Car Registration

In order to facilitate faster registration you are required to have the following documents;

  • Duty and VAT receipts
  • Import entry form (Form 63)
  • Foreign log book translated into English
  • Port Release Order
  • Bill of Lading or Airway Bill
  • Clean Report of Findings (CRF)
  • Import Declaration Form (IDF)
  • Authority to enter goods for home use from the Commissioner of Customs & Excise
  • Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) if the vehicle is for commercial use.
  • A temporary Importation Document (Form C44A or C44)
  • Road manifest or Carnet de Passages in the case of vehicles imported by road
  • Foreign Vehicle Receipt/License
  • Personal Identification Certificate Number (PIN) card
  • Certified copy of national identity card of vehicle owner or valid Passport.
  • Insurance cover
  • A duly filled Form “A” personally signed by the Importer.

Vehicle registration fee in Kenya is determined by several aspects which include the year the car was manufactured, the model and the type of vehicle i.e. if it’s personal or commercial.

Cost of Number Plate in Kenya

The cost of a number plate in Kenya is an average of Ksh.1,000,000 for a customized number plate and a range of Ksh.800,000 to Ksh.1,200,000 for a personalized number plate depending on the number of characters in the number plate. The cost of a normal number plate in Kenya is Ksh. 2,000 which is not as expensive as a personalized number plate.
