About the University of Limpopo (UL)?

The University of Limpopo is a relatively new institution that came from the merger between the University of the North and the former Medical University of South Africa. This merger occurred in January 2002. UL is one of many TVET Colleges.

Founded in 1976, the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA) got established to provide training facilities and tertiary education for students who are educationally disadvantaged in the fields of Allied Health, Nursing Sciences, Dentistry, and Medicine to meet South Africa’s health needs.

The UL campus is in the northwest of Pretoria. Its area is over 350 hectares, adjoining the Ga-Rankuwa Township. You can easily access it either by rail or by road. Scheduled bus services and taxis operate between Do. George Mukhari Hospital and Pretoria, and between Medunsa and Mabopane.

The University of the North got founded by the extension of the University Act of August 1, 1959. This Act included provisions for the establishment of universities that are racially exclusive to include black students in South Africa. Some facts about UL’s history are:

  • The University of the North got established around thirty kilometers from Polokwane, a town in Limpopo Province.
  • This was originally a college placed under the University of South Africa’s academic trusteeship.
  • The formative relationship of the school with the US ended with the South African Parliament’s promulgation of the University of the North Act.
  • In January 1970, the University of the North’s college status ended.
