Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized English language proficiency or competency test taken by non English speakers who wish to study in any English speaking university. Universities use this test as a metric for admission of students depending on how well they perform.

TOEFL and IELTS are the two most popular English test of which TOEFL is accepted by more than 11000 universities and in over 190 countries in the world. TOEFL is the one test that measures all 4 English skills which include; reading, listening, speaking, and writing just like the way you were assessed in elementary school.

First administered in 1964 by the modern language association after a national council of representatives from thirty companies and private organizations was created to review measure the of English language ability of non English natives and zap! came up with this test but after its first administration, ETS and the College Board decided on continuation in 1965.

Types Of TOEFL

There are three main types of TOEFL; Paper based test (PBT), Computer based test (CBT) and the internet based test (iBT). The paper based test was used until 1998 when the computer based test was introduced; it featured listening comprehension, reading comprehension and grammar while the computer based test featured reading, listening, grammar and writing. The internet based test came in 2005, and has since taken the lead though its still a computer based test.

Why You Should Write TOEFL?

Top universities in America use the TOEFL course as a matrix to admit non English speakers into universities in the US plus the test score is valid for two years.

Considering the fact that lots of universities in English speaking countries view this as a requirement because this test focuses on how English is used in a classroom setting. I have written TOEFL before and realised English wasn’t what I thought it to be, its quiet technical, I had to sit before an English speaking native, for real, heard the way he accentuated each word and I thought, “cool, just where my mistakes have laid.”

Its good you take the test if you wish to study in any top English universities in the US as lots of universities use the score on this test to judge how good you are with the four fundamental classroom skills. Aside from writing the exam because you need to be admitted, some people write the test to know just how good their English language is.

Who Writes TOEFL?

From transfer students to students who wish to study in the US but then not just anybody can write TOEFL. There are countries that have been exempted from taking the test and others that need to write SAT or IELTS but not TOEFL. This test is to be written by students who wish to study at any universities in the US, thus, this test measure their English language proficiency or ability.

It is worthy of note that not all students as earlier stated are required to write the test for example, non English natives who have schooled in any secondary schools or gotten any certificates or diplomas in any universities in the US, Ireland, Canada etc do not need to write this test.

In addition, non English speakers who had completed a two year course of study in which English was their major are equally exempted from taking the test as well as those who had taken the test already and whose test score is still valid.
