Social grants are administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). SASSA is mandated by the South African Social Security Agency Act of 2004 to “ensure the provision of comprehensive social security services against vulnerability and poverty within the constitutional legislative framework”.

SASSA Grant Eligibility
- South African Citizen
- Permanent resident or refugee registered on the home affairs database
- Persons who are holders of the special permits under the special Angolan dispensation, Lesotho exemption permit dispensation, Zimbabwe exemption permit dispensation
- Asylum seekers whose section 22 visas or permits are valid or were valid on the 15th of March 2020
- Currently residing within the borders of the Republic of South Africa
- Above the age of 18, below the age of 60
- Unemployed
- Not receiving any social grant in respect of himself or herself
- Not receiving an employment insurance benefit and does not qualify to receive an employment insurance benefit
- Not receiving a stipend from NSFAS and other financial aid
- Not receiving any other government Covid-19 response support
- Not a resident in a government-funded/subsidized institution
- Caregivers who are not receiving any grant on their own behalf will also be eligible to apply for the SRD grant.

In order to access or to have the application reconsidered for the Social Relief of Distress Grant, an applicant must grant consent for SASSA to verify his or her identity, residency, income, or social security benefits.
Applicants will also need to accept the declaration and consent.
The new process will now request the applicants to provide their banking details upfront so that SASSA can process R350 grant payments as soon as they meet the criteria.
It is not necessary to submit multiple applications. Confirmation will be received as soon as the application has been successfully submitted.
Those individuals who applied for the grant in the previous round will have to re-apply. Clients who previously canceled the grant, and who would like to re-activate the grant, due to a change in their circumstances are welcome to re-apply.
