RACIDA has worked to build the capacity of Agro-pastoralist communities living in Arid and Semi-Arid lands across the Horn of Africa in preventing and mitigating the impact of hazards of communities at risk. Anchored by a Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) approach, and guided by our belief that the communities we work with should be at the centre of their own development trajectory, we implement practical programmes that enable (Agro)-pastoral development, empowerment and wellbeing. Our mission is to To enhance self-reliance and prosperity amongst vulnerable pastoralist communities living in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands through promotion of better livelihood systems, sustainable use of natural resources and community empowerment.

We are currently recruiting to fill the following positions;

Consultancy for Project Cycle management Training for the Fankisha Kukabili Janga Improving First Responders Sector in Kenya

Outputs and Deliverables

The consultant shall deliver the following:

  • Training Manual: A comprehensive training manual that covers the discipline of project management, principles of project planning, design, preparation, and implementation techniques, as well as management skills for project management. The manual should include practical examples, case studies, and templates to aid participants in understanding the concepts.
  • Presentation Slides: A set of presentation slides that cover the main concepts, principles, and techniques of project management, project planning, design, and implementation techniques. The slides should be visually appealing and easy to understand.
  • Interactive Exercises: Interactive exercises designed to reinforce the learning from the training manual and presentation slides. These exercises should be prepared to be engaging and collaborative and encourage participants to apply the concepts in practical scenarios.
  • Case Studies: Case studies that showcase successful project management, planning, design, and implementation techniques. The case studies should be selected based on their relevance to the development context and should cover both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills.
  • Project Planning and Design Templates: Templates that participants can use for project planning and design, including sections for project scope, objectives, timelines, budget, risk management, stakeholder management, and communication planning.
  • Certificate of Completion: Participants receive a certificate of completion upon completing the training program. The certificate should be personalized and include the participant’s name, date, and duration of the training program.
  • Post-Training Evaluation: Participants fill out a post-training evaluation form to provide feedback on the training program. The evaluation form should include questions on the training program’s relevance, usefulness, and effectiveness, as well as suggestions for improvement. The evaluation results can be used to refine and improve future training programs.

Duration of Assignment

  • The consultant should be available to start work from April 2023 and should plan on completing the assignment within three weeks from the time of contract signing.

Qualifications and Experience of Consultant

The freelance consultant/consultancy firm must have the following experience and expertise:

  • Possess a degree in Project Management, Project planning and management or a relevant field from an accredited university.
  • At least five years of experience working on similar projects.
  • Ability to showcase previous similar trainings done.
  • Demonstrated experience working in the pastoral community setup.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience working in Isiolo, Mandera, Embu, Kiambu, and Nairobi.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required. Knowledge of other relevant local languages is desirable.

Application Requirements

  • Submit a technical proposal detailing the understanding of the assignment, proposed methodologies, expected activities, and deliverables with a work plan/timeline (in PDF format).
  • Submit a financial proposal in KES only. The financial proposal should detail the professional fees and other necessary costs to complete the assignment.
  • Provide a detailed CV of the professional working on the consultancy project.
  • Provide referees from a former line manager/HR Officer for your last 3 contracts.
  • Provide work certificates on letter heads
  • If applying as a firm, a certificate of Incorporation/Business Registration must be provided.
  • Submit a valid tax compliance certificate.
  • The individual/firm consultant must not be black-listed or sanctioned by any government or institution.
  • Professional references: Include at least three references from previous clients and the complete contact information of the referees.

Consultant Academic and Professional Qualification

  • To qualify for this position, you must have obtained a degree in Journalism/Communication or a related field from a recognized university.

Consultant Prior Work Experience

  • You should have at least five years of experience working in a similar capacity.
  • It is essential that you can showcase previous video work you produced.
  • It is essential that you can demonstrate your experience working in pastoral community settings.
  • Additionally, you must possess contextual knowledge of and have worked in Isiolo, Mandera, Embu, Kiambu, and Nairobi.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required, and knowledge of other relevant local languages is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant, grants management, bookkeeping, financial management, and/or accounting experience required, with preference for USAID funded administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of grants administration and knowledge of basic accounting and accounting practices is required, as well as general best practices in Kenya.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to prioritize multiple assignments in an extremely fast-paced environment, to meet deadlines, and to exercise good judgment that reflects positively on the CBCR activity.
  • Demonstrated high proficiency with Excel spreadsheet applications is required.
  • Professional level in English and local language.

This role will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, with frequent travel to Mandera, Moyale, and Karamoja cross-border cluster areas as required.

Consultancy for Communication Training for the Fankisha Kukabili Janga Improving First Responders Sector in Kenya

Communication Training Objectives

Overall Objective

  • Undertake an internal audit of the consortium members organisation’s communication approach.
  • Develop communication strategy and plan of actions for the three consortium members (RACIDA), St. John Ambulance of Kenya, and Merti-Integrated Development Programme (MID-P)
  • Develop different communication tools for different audiences to each consortium members
  • Support consortium members to develop their own communication strategies by building on the existing draft consortium communication strategy that was developed by the members.
  • Build the overall capacity for managing the communication of the consortium members; continued learning.

Outputs and Deliverables

The following deliverables are expected for the tasks mentioned:

Identification of strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement of the organization’s overall communication strategy:

  • A comprehensive report on the organization’s communication approach/strategy that highlights the strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement
  • A SWOT analysis that assesses the organization’s current communication strategy
  • Recommendations for improvement and areas that need further development
  • Undertaking an internal audit of the organization’s communication:
  • A comprehensive report on the organization’s internal communication systems and processes
  • An analysis of the effectiveness of the communication systems in place
  • Recommendations for improvement and areas that need further development

Development of a communication strategy and plan of action:

  • A communication strategy and plan of action that is tailored to the organization’s needs and goals
  • A detailed roadmap that outlines the steps required to implement the communication strategy
  • Clear timelines and measurable objectives that ensure the successful implementation of the strategy

Assessment and review of communication tools, target audiences, and messages; make recommendations and propose measures for improvement:

  • A comprehensive review of the organization’s communication tools, target audiences, and messages
  • Identification of gaps and areas that need improvement
  • Recommendations for the most effective communication tools, target audiences, and messages

Taking concrete measures to close gaps in the current communication strategy or its implementation in accordance with priorities and resources:

  • Explicit action points that outline the steps required to close gaps in the current communication strategy.
  • A timeline and resource allocation plan that ensures the successful implementation of the action points
  • Recommendations for the most effective communication tools, target audiences, and messages

Reaching out effectively and getting messages across to different target audiences using the most relevant tools and messages:

  • A comprehensive communication plan that outlines the best ways to reach out to different target audiences
  • Clear guidelines on how to use the most relevant communication tools and messages
  • A plan for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the communication plan

Building the overall capacity for managing the communication of an organization; continued learning:

  • A capacity-building plan that outlines the steps required to improve the organization’s communication management skills
  • Recommendations for training and development programs that can improve communication skills
  • A plan for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the capacity building plan.
