The Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) is an Executive Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade responsible for business administration and regulation of the laws; namely Companies Registration, Business Names Registration, Trade, and Service Marks Registration, granting of Patents and issuing of Industrial License. It was formally launched on 3rd December 1999.

What is BRELA Online Registration System (ORS)?

BRELA Online Registration System (ORS) is a system operated by the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) located at Ushirika Building at Mnazi Mmoja in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.

How to Create an Account in BRELA ORS?

Note: Before you start creating a new ORS account, you must have National Identification Number (NIN) from NIDA.

  • Step 1: Visit BRELA’s Online Registration System (ORS) at: https://ors.brela.go.tz
  • Step 2: Click “Create ORS Account
  • Step 3: Fill in your date of birth in the field named “Date of birth*“. Your National Identification Number (NIN) in the top field named “National ID*” in the form. Then click load from NIDA.

First NameMiddle NameGender fields will be auto-filled will data populated from NIDA. Fill in the rest of the Fields (Mobile telephone NoE-Mail AddressPasswordRepeat password, and Captcha. Tick the field Privacy and liability checkbox accepting privacy and liability terms if you agree to the terms.

You can view the terms in the included link at the bottom. Click submit when you are through (the yellow button at the top right). If something is wrong, you will see errors. Correct them and hit submit. If everything is fine an email with an activation link and login details will be sent to the email indicated in a form shortly. Follow the instructions indicated in the email to complete your account creation in BRELA ORS.

How to Register a Company in Tanzania Online

For company registration in Tanzania, these steps may be followed:

  1. Decide on a Business Structure for Your Company

Choose the legal entity type you wish to run your business as – from among limited liability companies, public companies, branches, or representative offices.

  1. Register Your Business Name

Register the name of your company with the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA).

Keep in mind that the name proposed should be unique and not identical to the existing registered business in Tanzania.

Before you start to register a new business name, you must have the following requirements:

  • The person who wants to do the registration must have an ORS account opened as per the details in part A above.
  • The person(s) who will be the owner(s) of the business name must have National Identification Number (NIN) from NIDA.
  1. Submit Documents

Prepare the Memorandum & Articles of Association (MAA) and fill form 14A, giving detailed information about office location, directors, and company secretary. Submit form 14A to BRELA. This shall be processed (taking about 2 days), and if everything is in order, BRELA will issue a certificate of incorporation.

  1. Register with the Tax Authority

Obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) for your company. It is issued for free by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Once TRA has issued a TIN, they will open a tax file for your business and you will be required to fill the tax return form.

  1. Get a Business Licence

Obtain a business license, wherewith you can commence your business in Tanzania legally. The type of business license would depend on the nature of the activity your business is involved in. A general business license can be obtained from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment or the Municipal Council in the locality in which your business is would be operating. Businesses in certain sectors like oil & gas, food & beverage, manufacturing, consultancy, etc. are required to apply for special licenses or permits.

  • Certified Memorandum and Articles of Association
  • Certified copy of the lease agreement (with stamp duty and withholding tax paid) for the office
  • Passport copies of the shareholders and directors
