What are the largest construction companies in the world? The ICON 2022 Index offers a list of the largest construction companies in the world based on the 2021 revenues of the planet’s 200 biggest contractors.
According to the report, the top 200 companies in construction reported total sales of $1.968 trillion – a record figure – up from $1.746 trillion in 2020.
Sales for Chinese contractors rose from $697 billion to $866 billion – which equates to 44% of the total sales recorded in 2021. On the other hand, sales for US-based contractors rose from $226 billion to $246 billion.

Here’s a look at the 10 largest construction companies.
1. CSCEC
China State Construction & Engineering Co. is the largest construction company in the world with sales of $290 billion in 2021, up from $220.3 billion in 2020.
The company’s earnings stood at $203.1 billion in 2019.
The impressive earnings have been attributed to China’s domestic focus on public infrastructure as well as the Belt and Road Initiative.
Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, CSCEC has worked on numerous construction projects in many parts of the world including Daxing International Airport, the Great Mosque of Algiers, and the new administrative capital of Egypt.
2. China Railway Group
The China Railway Group is the second in the ICON list of the world’s top companies for construction with sales of $166 billion in 2021, from $141.2 billion in 2020.
The company’s earnings stood at $124.3 billion in 2019.
Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, China Railway Group participates in many large-scale infrastructure projects overseas especially in Southeast Asia and Africa.
3. China Railway Construction Corp.
Like its compatriots, China Railway Construction Corp. enjoyed a great 2021 with its sales rising to $157 billion, up from $131.3 billion in 2020.
Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, CRCC has built much of the transport infrastructure in China, including the renowned Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway.
4. CCCC
Retaining its fourth position in the list of the world’s biggest companies in construction, China Communications Construction Company recorded $105 billion in sales in 2021, a significant increase from $90.5 billion in 2020.
The company’s earnings stood at $80.7 billion in 2019.
Notable projects: Based in Xicheng District, Beijing, CCCC has undertaken several projects including Karnaphuli Tunnel, an underwater expressway tunnel in the port city of Chattogram, Bangladesh, beneath River Karnaphuli.
5. MCC
The Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) is the world’s fifth biggest construction company with sales of $77 billion in 2021, up from $57.7 billion in 2020.
Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, MCC has been involved in Saindak Copper-Gold Project in Pakistan, copper mining in Afghanistan, and nickel mining in Papua New Guinea.
Editor’s Note: In 2021, the five biggest companies for construction were all Chinese – with total sales of $795 billion, up from $640.3 billion in 2020.
6. VINCI
VINCI retained its sixth position in the ICON list of largest construction companies with its sales rising to $58 billion in 2021 from $54.6 billion in 2020.
Notable projects: Based in Paris, France, VINCI has been involved in many construction projects around the world including the Atlantic Bridge in Panama, and Old Oak Common Station in London, whose completion is scheduled for 2030.
7. Bouygues Construction SA
French company Bouygues Construction SA rose to position seven from eight after its sales jumped to $44 billion in 2021, up from $39.6 billion a year earlier.
Notable projects: Based in Paris, France, Bouygues Construction has been involved in many construction projects in Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia.
These projects include the Singapore Sports Hub, Port of Miami Tunnel, and the Henri Konan Bedie Bridge in Abidjan among many others.
8. Shanghai Construction Group
The Shanghai Construction Group rose to position eight from nine in this year’s ranking with sales of $43 billion in 2021, up from $33.5 billion in 2020.
Notable projects: Based in Shanghai, China, Shanghai Construction Group was in 2014 awarded an $11 million contract for a sewage tunnelling project in Edmonton, Canada – becoming the first Chinese company to undertake tunnel drilling work in North America.
In the same year, the company was contracted by Tanzania to build 12,000 houses for the Tanzanian Army in a project financed by a $550 million loan from the Exim Bank of China.
9. ACS Group
Spanish contractor ACS Group fell to position nine from seven with sales shrinking to $32 billion in 2021, down from $39.8 billion in 2020 and $43.7 billion in 2019.
Notable projects: Based in Madrid, Spain, ACS Group has undertaken many projects including the Portugues Dam in Ponce, Puerto Rico and the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project near Las Vegas, which was completed in 2016.
10. D R Horton
American home construction company D R Horton closes the list of the 10 largest contractors in the world after posting $27 billion in sales last year.
The company joined the list after displacing German contractor Hochtief – which held the position in the past two years with sales of $26.2 billion in 2020.
Headquartered in Arlington, Texas, D R Horton has held the title of America’s largest home construction company by sales since 2002. It operates four brands: D.R. Horton, Freedom Homes, Emerald Homes brand – which deals in luxury real estate, Express Homes – tailored to entry-level buyers.
