Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

We are recruiting to fill the following positions;

  1. Assistant Principal Research Scientist (Trainers) – 4 positions
  2. Principal Librarian
  3. Principal Legal Officer
  4. Principal Cateress
  5. Principal Driver

Assistant Principal Research Scientist (Trainers) – 4 positions

Position Description

  • The Assistant Principal Research Scientist will be reporting to the Director, Directorate of Research Capacity Building

Job Specifications
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifying research gaps in line with the Institute’s research priority areas;
  • Development of research proposals in the relevant research thematic area;
  • Implementing pre-clinical and clinical research projects and/or supervise designated aspects of the work;
  • Conducting medical examinations and writing medical reports;
  • General diagnosis, care, treatment and provision of specialized clinical care for study participants;
  • Conducting community diagnosis, care and treatment during Corporate Social
  • Responsibility (CSR) activities;
  • Establishing strategic partnerships for research, training, innovations, technology;
  • Sourcing for grants to fund the approved research protocols;
  • Supervising junior professional and technical staff attached to his/her pre-clinical and clinical research program,
  • Monitoring and evaluating implementation of research projects;
  • Writing manuscripts, reports and translating research findings into lay language;
  • Disseminating and translating research findings for evidence based policy formulations and implementation;
  • Identifying technology with potential for intellectual property protection;

Person Specifications
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: –

  • At least four (4) years relevant work experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields;-Medicine and surgery, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmacy or equivalent qualifications from a recognized Institution;
  • Master’s degree in any of the following fields;-, Clinical Medicine/ Surgery/ Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy;

OR

  • Master’s Degree in any of the following disciplines:- Biomedical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Sciences, Public Health, any relevant Social Science, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution;
  • Developed at least twelve (12) proposals, six (6) of which have been funded;
  • Published at least six (6) articles in refereed journals with at least three (3) article as the first or lead author;
  • Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
  • Proficiency in computer application; and
  • Fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Principal Librarian

Position description

  • The Librarian will be reporting to the Director, Research Capacity Building

Job Specifications
Duties and responsibilities will entail;

  • Initiating formulation and reviewing of library information policies;
  • Legislation, standards, rules and regulations and facilitate their implementation;
  • Overseeing the development of programs and activities to promote library and information service and reading culture;
  • Validating networking and collaboration programs;
  • Ensuring library and information services are in conformity with international standards, procedures and norms;
  • Advising the Institute on all matters pertaining to management of library information services;
  • Coordinating library and information activities in all Centres within the Institute;
  • Liaising with stakeholders to mobilize resources for library information services; overseeing and reviewing budget proposals for the department;
  • Facilitating innovation and review of library information services and products;
  • Overseeing monitoring, evaluation and report on implementation of library service programs; and
  • Development, implementation and realization of the department’s strategic objectives, performance contracts and appraisal systems.

Person Specifications
For appointment to this grade an officer must have: –

  • At least eight (8) years relevant work experience three (3) of which should have been in supervisory role;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Library or Information Studies or their recognized qualifications from a recognized institution;
  • Post graduate diploma in Library or Information Studies;
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Studies or their recognized qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
  • Proficiency in Computer Applications;
  • Demonstrated merit, skills and abilities as reflected in work performance and results; and
  • Fulfil the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Principal Legal Officer

Job Specification
The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail: –

  • Providing legal advice to the Management on specific aspects under the directive of the Deputy Director (Legal Services).
  • Drawing contracts, agreements and other legal documents for the Institute;
  • Undertaking research on different information to ensure that the Institute is acting in accordance with all applicable laws;
  • Preparing Quarterly Legal Reports;
  • Identifying legal and compliance risks and issues relative to the Institute’s intended actions;
  • Managing the risk exposure of the Institute by ensuring compliance with all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements;
  • Drafting of legal opinions and preparing witnesses for court attendance;
  • Review pleadings filed in court from time to time;
  • Attendance of court from time to time to monitor progress of court cases involving the Institute;
  • Undertaking conveyance for the Institute properties;
  • Handling of intellectual property rights aspects of the institution.
  • Undertaking such assignments as may be assigned by immediate supervisor;

Person Specifications
For appointment to this grade, an officer must have: –

  • At least eight (8) years relevant work experience three (3) of which should have been at supervisory role;
  • Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized institution;
  • Master’s Degree in any of the following disciplines; Law, Business Administration, Public Administration or equivalent qualifications from a recognized Institution is an added advantage;
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education;
  • Admitted as an advocate of the High Court Kenya;
  • Membership to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
  • Valid practicing licence;
  • Management course lasting not less four (4) weeks;
  • Proficiency in computer applications;
  • Demonstrated work performance and results; and
  • Fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution. Certification in Data Protection and 3 years’ experience in a Data protection environment will be an added advantage.

Principal Cateress

Job specifications
The duties and responsibilities at this level will include:

  • Policy development and implementation for the section
  • Developing and coordinating the implementation of catering procedures and guidelines;
  • Involved in budget making and controls for the section.
  • Carrying out regular checks to determine the functionality of the catering equipment
  • Providing specifications for the procurement of catering equipment and materials;
  • Keeping records of the catering equipment, materials and supplies;
  • Manage the catering section and ensure efficiency
  • Carrying out coaching and mentoring catering staff interns and trainees; and preparing periodical reports.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of a strategic plan and performance targets for the section.

Person specifications

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:-

  • At least eight (8) years relevant work experience three (3) of which should have been in supervisory role;
  • 2-3 years Diploma in any of the following disciplines; Institutional Management; Catering and Accommodation Management; Hospitality Management; Technology in Hotel and Restaurant management or its equivalent from a recognized institution;
  • 2 years Higher National Diploma in any of the following disciplines; Institutional Management; Catering and Accommodation Management;
  • Hospitality Management; Technology in Hotel and Restaurant management OR Bachelor degree in any of the discipline Technology in Hotel and Restaurant Management; Hospitality Management; Foods and Nutrition;
  • Technology in Nutrition and Dietetics; OR
  • Bachelor degree in any of the following disciplines; Institutional Management;
  • Catering and Accommodation Management; Hospitality Management;
  • Technology in Hotel and Restaurant management; Foods and Nutrition;
  • Technology in Nutrition and Dietetics; \
  • Registration/certification with a relevant professional body;
  • Supervisory Course not lasting less than two (2) weeks from a recognized institution;
  • Proficiency in computer application;
  • Demonstrated professional competence and ability as reflected in work performance and results; and
  • Fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Principal Driver

Job Specifications
Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:

  • Driving vehicles as authorized;
  • Carrying out routine checks on the vehicles;
  • Detecting and report malfunctioning of vehicles system;
  • Maintaining records of vehicles;
  • Ensuring security and safety of the vehicle;
  • Ensure safety of the passengers and or goods therein;
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the vehicle;
  • Ensuring adherence to or observations of traffic laws; and
  • Reporting any incidents to police and/or the office immediately they occur.

Person Specifications
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:-

  • At least eight (8) years relevant work experience where applicable;
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education mean grade of D+ or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
  • Valid driving license free from any current endorsements and valid for any of the classes of vehicles which the officer is required to drive;
  • Passed the Suitability Test for Drivers Grade II;
  • First-Aid Certificate Course lasting not less than one (1) week from St. John Ambulance or Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution.
  • Customer Service Training Certificate from Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution;
  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Kenya police;
  • Proficiency in computer application;
  • Demonstrated work performance and results; and
  • Fulfil the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.

Terms of Employment:

  • Employment is for one (1) year contract as per KEMRI Human Resource Policy and Procedures Manual with a probation period for the first three (3) months.
