A Ghanaian passport is the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document for Ghanaians who travel abroad. Issued to Ghanaian citizens only, a Ghanaian passport reflects the identity of the applicant as determined by documentary evidence of citizenship and documents to support identity.
Ghanaian passports are issued exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to Ghanaians granted citizenship in accordance with the Ghanaian nationality law. There are three types of passport booklets – contemporary (regular), service, and diplomatic passports. Ghanaian passport booklets are valid for travel by Ghanaians anywhere in the world, although the holder may need to obtain a visa from the destination country when traveling for some purposes. More than one valid Ghanaian passport of the same type may not be held.

There are three types of Ghanaian passports:
- Contemporary – Issuable to all citizens and non-citizen nationals and valid for ten years from the date of issue.
- Service – Issuable to officials attached to government institutions that travel on official business.
- Diplomatic – Issuable to Ghanaian diplomats accredited overseas and their eligible dependents.

Ghana Passport Online Application
Can I Apply For A Ghanaian Passport Online? Yes, you can now apply for a Ghanaian passport online. The application process is simple and easy to use with online application guidelines. Follow the steps below to apply for a Ghanaian Passport online.
Note: If you already had an account on passport.mfa.gov.gh, kindly create a new account on Ghana.gov with the same email address you used for the passport account to enable you to have access to that same account.
- Open the Ghana.gov website
- Click on Passport Office
- Click on “Apply”
- Click “OK”
- Click on “Sign Up” at the right-corner of your screen
- Enter your details as shown in the screenshot below
- Click on “Continue” after completing the details
- A One Time Password (OPT) would be sent to the phone number provided during the registration.
- Enter the OTP and hit “Continue”
- Click on “Apply”
- Search for the Passport Office
- Click on “Apply”
- You would be redirected to a different page as shown below
- Click on “Authorize” to enable the application share your details with the Passport Application portal
- You will be redirected to the passport application platform as shown below to either Make Payment or Verify Voucher
What documents do I need for a Ghanaian passport?
- Birth Certificate(Proof of Ghanaian citizenship)
- Documents to support Identity such as Driver’s Licence, National ID card
- Proof of Profession (An introductory letter from the applicant’s employer that is if the applicant is currently employed or a work ID card that bears applicant’s name, organisation’s name and position. A student ID if the applicant is currently in school. Homemakers/housewives and applicants that are unemployed and those in the non-formal sector of employment like mechanics, hairdressers seamstresses, traders etc. do not need proof. Registered Business Owners and self-employed applicants must produce their business registration certificate as proof)
