The Ghana Card is a national Identity card that is issued by the Ghanaian Government to Ghanaian citizens – both resident and non-resident, and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals. It is proof of identity, citizenship, and residence of the holder. The current version is in ID1 format and biometric.
Ghana Card is a secure and multi-purpose card issued by the National Identification Authority- NIA that captured the real biometric identity of its holders. Also, the NIA Ghana card will help create one national ID database for Ghanaian.
Therefore, you can link all National ID Card onto the Ghana card such as Social Security And National Insurance Trust – SSNIT, GRA – TIN Number, NHIS among others for verification and authentication of electronic and physical transactions to be conducted in the public and private services space.

Can I apply for a Ghanaian card online? Yes, you can now apply for a Ghanaian card online. The application process is simple and easy to use with online application guidelines. Follow the steps below to apply for a Ghanaian card online.
How to Register Ghana Card Online
Here are the steps to follow.
- Login NIA official website: https://nia.gov.gh/
- Register as Institutions or Household or Download PDF form and fill in all details
- Complete all the online application forms
- Submit a copy at the NIA Head Office or District Offices or via email to mobileregistration@nia.gov.gh
- Visit the registration center with a copy
- Go through an interview process to confirm your eligibility for a Ghana Card.
Guidelines for completing the Online Application Form
Before you complete the Online Application Form, please note the following:
(a) Completing an online Application Form for the Ghana Card does not automatically qualify or make you eligible for a Ghana Card.
(b) Submitting an online Application Form does not complete the registration process. It simply reduces the time within which the registration process is completed.

(c) Ensure that you print a copy of your completed and submitted online application form and bring it along when attending your interview.
(d) You are required to present a copy of the completed Application Form at any of NIA’s Regional or District Offices go through an interview process to confirm your eligibility for a Ghana Card.
(e) If you do not possess any of the mandatory registration documents, you will be required to come along with the person(s) vouching for you during the interview process.
(f) Except for a valid passport, a Birth Certificate, and a Naturalization document, all Government-issued ID cards and documents DO NOT form part of the mandatory documents required to confirm the eligibility of an applicant to register for a Ghana Card.
(g) Electronic versions of mandatory and supporting documents are NOT acceptable.
NB: Only hard copies of original documents are acceptable during the interview process.
(h) Any person(s) vouching for you the applicant must be 18 years or older, of sound mind, and a holder of a Ghana Card and must fall within the category of persons permitted by law to vouch for an applicant.
Who can register for the Ghana Card?
Every Ghanaian Citizen living within the country and abroad has the right to be in the National Identification System and citizens from age zero(0) are entitled to be issued with a national ID card, as required by the law, to provide added convenience and ease when conducting with public sector institutions, civil society organizations and private sector businesses.
Registration Eligibility
- All Ghanaians (living at home and abroad)
- All persons that hold Ghanaian citizenship in addition to citizenship of any other foreign country (dual citizen)
- Registration covers all persons aged 0 years and above
Ghana Card Registration Requirements
Information needed during the mass registration includes:
Personal Information
- An applicant has to appear in person
- Original copy of the Birth Certificate of the applicant
- Or a valid Ghanaian Passport of the applicant
- Digital Address of the applicant
- Original copy of Naturalization Certificate
Information about Parents
Their names, Address dates and places of birth, etc.
- Biometrics
The fingerprints, iris, and photograph would be taken and any other personal details that may be required
- Parental, spousal, and next of kin information
- Name of a spouse. Full name of the father. Father’s hometown/district/region
- Father’s nationality. Full name of the mother. Mother’s maiden name
- Mother’s nationality. Mother’s hometown/district/region. Next of Kin
- Address of next of Kin. Supplementary Spousal List for those with more than one spouse.
- Primary Verification Documents
Individuals would be required to present any of the verification documents (i.e. Birth certificate, certificate of acquired citizenship, or valid passport) to help validate the information provided.
- Harmonization
Applicants with documents or I.D Cards of the following institutions must bring them along for harmonization of data with NIA – DVLA (LICENCE), NHIS, TAX (TIN), PASSPORT, EC (VOTER CARD).
