GDE Online Application

GDE Admissions 2024 – Apply online for Grade 1 and/or Grade 8 to secure space at a Public School in Gauteng. ONLINE Admissions Applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 is open from 15 June 2023 to 14 July 2023


For annual programmes, students must pre-enroll at the end of the year, for the following academic year. Enrolment forms must be accompanied by proof of payment of the non-refundable registration fee. Please bring a certified copy of your id and the latest school report or certificate for enrolment purposes. All courses are subject to student numbers.

GDE Online Application Procedure

Logon to and click on Register. Kindly follow through each one of the 5 steps below to make an application.

  • Step 1: Register Personal Details
    • After entering password, Make sure that your password contains all the following characters:
      • 1 lower case alphabetical character
      • 1 upper case alphabetical character
      • 1 numeric character
      • 1 special character
      • 8 character or longer
    • Enter the exact same password in Confirm Password
    • After you complete Step 1 (Register parent details), you will receive an SMS with your user name and password. Please SAVE this information and use it to login to view your applications at any time
  • Step 2: Address Details
  • Step 3: Register Learner Details
  • Step 4: Apply to a School
  • Step 5: Upload / Submit Documents

RECOMMENDED: How To Check GDE Admission Status 2023/2024

When your application is complete, you will receive an SMS with a reference number (Please save this information).

There are 5 application options, namely:

  • Option 1 – Home: The applicant learner’s place of residence is closest to the school within the feeder zone
  • Option 2 – Sibling / Previous School: the applicant learner has a sibling attending the school (This is NOT applicable to Siblings who already in Grade 7 or Grade 12 at the time of application)
  • Option 3 – Work: the place of employment of at least one of the applicant learner’s parents is within the feeder zone of the school;
  • Option 4 – 30 kms within of the school: the applicant learner’s place of residence is within a 30 kms of the school; or
  • Option 5 – beyond 30 kms from the school: the applicant learner’s place of residence is beyond a 30 kms from the school

To make sure your child is accepted at a school close to your home address:

  • When Registering your details (Step 1), make sure that you type in your home address accurately
  • When Applying (Step 3), select Home Option to see the list of schools with feeder zones that cover your home address. Apply to the schools that are closest to your home address
  • Note that placement is based on the number of spaces available at the school


1. How to Reset your password OR wrong password:

  • Click Forgot Password
  • You will receive an SMS with a onetime pin (OTP)
  • Enter the OTP on the System and create a new password

2. If you are having issues going beyond the ID Section, kindly follow the steps below:

  • Refresh the page.
  • Make sure that you have entered the correct ID Number.
  • Your ID number is validated by the department of Home Affairs (DHA).
  • The System will provide all the vowels in your name and surname and you need to add the consonants.
  • After adding the consonants, click OK / Submit to continue with your application

3. If your location/address is incorrect OR you can’t find your location/address:

  • Click on Can’t find address and type what type of area do you live in
  • You will be prompted to enter your House Number, Street Name and Suburb / Township
  • If your address still does not appear in the list, Click on the Map and type your address in the search for address space
  • Note that you only have ONE opportunity to edit your Home address and or work address.

4. To remove one of the schools you applied for;

  • Login to the System,
  • In My Profile, and under Schools Applied To, you will be able to delete the school/s and apply to another school

5. If you cannot find the schools you want to apply for in your area;

  • Make sure that you have entered your home address correctly, and select the Home Address Within Feeder Zone option
  • If you do not see the school(s) that you are looking for, type the name of the school in the Search field
  • If you still do not see the name of the school appearing, select the Home Address within 30km Radius option and Type the name of the school in the Search field
  • The school name should appear in the drop-down list

6. If you cannot open the ‘Send Page”,

  • Make sure that all the information you have entered is 100% correct
  • If there is a red line around any box, you need to correct the information in that box

7. If you cannot log into the system;

  • First click Register and add your personal information
  • You will receive an SMS with your username and password
  • To Login later, use the username and password received


  • Only apply for learners that are going to Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2022 and apply on the GDE Admissions Online System
  • Priority is given to applicants who apply to a school with a feeder zone that covers their home address. Therefore, the first applicant is not prioritised for placement at the school applied to
  • Parents must apply for ALL learners that are currently in Grade R and in Grade 7;
  • Please go directly to a school in your area. the school will advise on availability of space
  • You cannot apply online for a child that is to repeat Grade 1 / Grade 8.
  • Non-South African Citizens may apply
  • To apply for a neighbour’s child or sister’s / brother’s child, DO NOT use your own profile. You must Register the details (ID Number, cell phone number, address) of your neighbour / sister / brother for their children’s applications.
  • You can apply to a maximum of 5 different schools for one child
  • Each parent may apply for a maximum of 3 children per Grade. This means each parent can apply to Grade 1 for 3 different learners to Grade 8 for another 3 different learners.
  • Parents for different household are allowed a total of 5 applications for each learner
  • You cannot use the GDE Admissions Online System to apply to schools in other provinces
  • The child must be five, turning six by 30 June 2022. You will not be able to apply for a child younger than this. There is no age limit to apply to Grade 1. However, over-aged learners may be redirected for admission to the relevant
  • You must make 2 applications if you are applying for twins, the System will later recognize the same date of birth in your profile to ensure that your twins go to the same school
  • Parents have 30 days to apply and must NOT form crowds at Walk-in Centres


  • Applicants may upload certified copies of required Documents ONLINE to one of the schools that you applied to. This forms Step 5 of the application process. Other schools that you applied to will be able to view (see) the documents
  • If documents are submitted in hard copy, applicants must submit certified copies of required Documents to all the schools they applied to
  • You do not have to submit your documents to the school if you have already uploaded it on the System
  • Only submit documents to the schools if you could not upload it on the System
  • Each document must be scanned individually and uploaded separately
  • All documents must be certified
  • You will see the attachment on the System to indicate that you have attached your documents
  • You will also receive an SMS confirming submission of documents
  • If you see your attachment on the System, the school can also see it
  • If there are issues regarding documents you submitted, the school will send you an SMS requesting that you submit hard copies if the uploaded documents could not be verified


The application fee is stated in the application form.

Make sure that your application is complete

If your application for admission to study through the GDE is incomplete, you will have to re-apply during the next application period.


Certified copies of the following Documents must be submitted to the school or uploaded on the System within 7 days after making an application:


  • Child birth certificate
  • Parent/Guardian ID or Passport
  • Valid Proof of Home/ Parent Work address
  • Child Clinic card for Grade 1 application or recent Grade 7 report card for Grade 8 application


  • Parent Study Permit and Passport
  • Parent Work Permit and Passport
  • Parent Refugee Permit
  • Parent Asylum Seeker Permit
  • Valid Proof of Home/Work address
  • Child Clinic card for Grade 1 application
  • Most recent Grade 7 report card for Grade 8 application

For awaiting ID/Birth certificates, parents must obtain a temporary ID / Birth certificate from the Department of Home Affairs


Contact the boarding school directly to apply for accommodation in the school’s boarding facilities. Note that boarding schools apply specific criteria to admit learners to their boarding facilities. If the child is accepted in the boarding facility, the parent must apply on the GDE Admissions Online System to be accommodated in the school
