What to Know About the Exxaro Bursary
The Exxaro Bursary Programme is mainly aimed at 2nd, 3rd or 4th year Black South African students, studying undergraduate degrees in core mining industry disciplines. The aim of the Exxaro Bursary Programme is to establish a talent pool of young and highly motivated students.
Financial assistance is provided to these students in order to prepare them for a career with the company. Exxaro will provide bursaries to students studying:
- 2nd year BSc Geology
- 2nd year Mine Surveying B-Technical
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Civil Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Industrial Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Mechanical Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Metallurgical Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Mining Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Electronic Engineering
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th year Mechatronic Engineering
Eligibility and Requirements
Prospective applicants need to satisfy all of the requirements of the Exxaro Bursary in order to be considered for the Programme:
- Applications are open to South African citizens ONLY.
- Applicants who have successfully obtained their National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Applicants who received a minimum Level 5 Grade for English HomeLanguage/First Additional Language in Grade 11 and 12.
- Applicants who received a minimum Level 6 Grade for Mathematics and Physical Science in Grade 11 and 12.
- Applicants who are full-time students at an accredited South African Tertiary Institution.
- Applicants should be studying or intend to study one of the above mentioned degrees.
Exxaro Bursary Coverage
The Exxaro Bursary Programme will provide successful applicants with financial assistance which will pay for the costs of the relevant degree. The bursary will cover the:
- Registration fees of the successful applicant.
- Tuition fees for the successful applicant.
- Accommodation fees for the successful applicant.
- Laptop allowance for the successful applicant.
- Cash allowance for the successful applicant.
- Meal allowance for the successful applicant
Please note that successful applicants will also be provided with:
- Assistance from senior industry role models.
- Yearly work experience at Exxaro sites.
- Administrative assistance.
- Networking with Exxaro Bursary Programme recipients.
- National Mining Indaba invitation.

Kindly note that students applying for the Exxaro Bursary Bursary Programme should complete the following online application –
The following supporting information will be attached to the applicant’s application form:
- Their full name and surname
- Their email address
- Their phone number
- Their ID number
- Their age
- Their ethnic group
- Their gender
- Their home province
- Their hometown
- Their year of matriculation
- Their current year of study
- Their estimation as to when they would finish their Degree
- Their current Degree
- Their academic average
Please note that prospective applicants are required to write a motivational letter stating why they believe they should be awarded with the Exxaro Bursary.
Failure to adhere to the application requirements will result in the application being disregarded.
Shortlisted candidates are required to complete their National Benchmark Test (NBT) as well as undergoing a psychometric assessment.
Selected applicants are required to appear for an interview at Exxaro Headquarters in Pretoria.
Exxaro Bursary Online Application Deadline
Please note that bursary applications for the Exxaro Bursary Programme will close on the 30 of April 2021. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the Exxaro Bursary Programme.
Applicants who have not received any feedback within a month of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
